The Focalgate Team

Each of our seven principle consultants has over 30 years of relevant business and nonprofit experience. They are joined by a broad team of highly qualified experts and support staff working together to help you achieve success.

The Focalgate team of IT experts holds more than 15 Microsoft certifications including MCSE, MCDST, MCITP, MCP, MCTS, MCSA, and MCSE:M and is comprised of network and server administrators, wireless network engineers, and technology support staff.

Mike

Mike has been an entrepreneur and small business owner for over 40 years, starting and operating numerous small businesses in a variety of sectors.  He understands what it takes to be successful, including the important administrative requirements of operating a successful organization.  He’s an expert at utilizing the right technology and designing systems to best accomplish our client’s back office needs.

Starting and developing a diverse range of nonprofits including faith-based communities, youth development organizations, neighborhood associations, and nurse block programs is another of Mike’s achievements.  His care for others translated into the positive business practices of his consulting business North Star NP.  It was NSNP’s goal to assist nonprofits by offering practical back office support and information technology services so they could concentrate on accomplishing their mission.

NSNP’s commitment to the nonprofit community quickly created growth, and the attention of for-profit organizations, and soon NSNP found itself also serving the IT and back office needs of locally owned restaurants, dental clinics, commercial developers, advertising agencies, and more. 

We are now known as Focalgate, offering an expanded set of comprehensive services to nonprofits, businesses, and governmental entities, while maintaining the positive collaborative spirit of North Star NP.  Mike has grown the business steadily through careful additions of highly experienced consultants who share his positive outlook and commitment.

Mike uses his extensive experience in creating new ventures to assist our clients with all their startup entity formation and back office needs.  Every successful organization needs a strong foundation to grow on, Mike helps ensure it for our clients.

Stacy

All our clients benefit from Stacy’s 30+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector.  She’s been in the trenches managing large scale volunteer efforts, felt the pressure to raise sufficient funding for her team and their mission, and risen to the Executive Director level of a nationwide A-level nonprofit.  She understands how important your mission is to you and draws on her wealth of experience to help you accomplish your goals.  

The reality of nonprofit is the need for nearly constant fundraising and Stacy knows how to make that happen.  She has managed fundraising efforts for small local nonprofits to large national organizations, including galas and events with budgets in excess of $200,000.  Stacy has increased funding year over year for every organization she’s managed.  She’s also experienced in successful grant writing, procuring public and private funding ranging from $2,500 to over $325,000 in single grant awards.

Strategic vision is critical for the long-term success of nonprofits, as an entity and for the success of their mission.  Stacy has the breadth and depth of experience to assist you in developing the right vision and translating it into a long-term strategic plan to guide your organization to success.

Stacy posesses a strong communication and marketing background combined with a unique ability for missional storytelling.  Through this she cultivates meaningful long-term relationships with funding sources.  These strong long-term government, corporate, and community partnerships create stable dollar generation platforms for the organizations she has served and assisted.  

Day to day operations may not be glamorous but they are critical to success; creating and managing a well running volunteer operation is a big part of that.  Stacy is passionate about others becoming involved in the mission of nonprofit organizations.  Volunteer service affords those in the community the opportunity to join with the organization's mission, and it provides important cost savings for the nonprofit.  Stacy has developed and grown successful volunteer programs at every organization she’s been part of, including organizations with thousands of volunteers in mission-specific fundraising programs.

Stacy holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership from Bethel University and is most passionate about the outdoors, the arts, and reaching shared goals alongside others.

Sue

Sue has over 30 years of administrative and managerial experience at a variety of nonprofit organizations, specializing in human resources.  She’s our client’s go-to person for all things HR.

Her expertise in benefits management, policy development and implementation, recruitment and retention, unemployment and workers compensation, employee relations, and wage administration is a valuable resource for nonprofits and businesses alike.

Sue holds a bachelor’s degree from Gustavus Adolphus College.  In addition to working collaboratively to implement processes that are practical and sustainable for our clients, she also currently serves on the board of Ruff Start Rescue and the Little Hubert Lake association.

 

Don

Don provides our clients with over 30 years of experience in high level data analytics and application development.  Not only has he performed the analysis, Don designed and developed the software solutions used by actuaries to set reserves and determine pricing in the insurance industry; critical functions for the ongoing profitability and success of those organizations.

The data analytics initiatives Don leads can help businesses increase revenues, improve operational efficiency, optimize marketing campaigns, respond more quickly to emerging market trends, and gain a competitive edge over rivals -- all with the ultimate goal of boosting profits.

Don graduated with honors from The Institute of Technology, The University of Minnesota with a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics and a minor in Computer Science.  When he’s not crunching numbers or writing Excel macros, Don has one passion: music.  He sings in two choirs, plays the baritone, and boasts an extensive personal music collection.   

Tom

Tom brings a wide array of finance experience to the Focalgate team including econometrics, accounting, and financial analysis in organizations from small private to large multinational corporations.  

Some of the many positions Tom has filled in over 30 years in the finance area include business analyst, corporate controller, and Chief Financial Officer. 

He provides our clients with extensive experience focused on tax preparation and regulatory compliance for businesses and nonprofits.  Tom also provides clients assistance in financial reporting, accounting systems, budgeting, business analysis, and financial planning.

Tom earned his bachelors and Master of Business Administration degrees from The University of Minnesota.

Bill

Bill is a financial professional with 35 years of experience focused on helping nonprofits succeed.  He’s held a variety of positions with nonprofits large and small including Chief Financial Officer. 

He provides a wide array of services for Focalgate clients including bookkeeping, financial planning, and business analysis and strategy. 

Bill holds a Master of Business Administration from The University of St. Thomas with a specialization in Nonprofits, has previously shared his knowledge as a volunteer treasurer, and has volunteered for the AmeriCorps program.

George

George brings over 30 years of wide-ranging marketing and executive level business competency to the Focalgate team. 

His breadth of experience includes upstream and downstream product management responsibility for a $150 million consumer products business comprising product development, tv, radio, print, and outdoor advertising, market and consumer research, sales material creation, and package design. 

George’s high technology experience was earned leading large scale cross-functional product development teams located across three continents designing and developing high capacity wireless and wired networking equipment, intrinsically safe networking and communications equipment, large scale mesh networks, tracking and communications systems, and remote telemetry and security site designs and installations. 

Regulatory affairs is another area of competency for George.  He’s experienced working with the FDA, FCC, MSHA, foreign governmental entities, and third-party testing organizations in the areas of regulatory compliance and product approvals. 

International business is a special area of interest for George.  He’s skilled at sourcing raw materials and components from multiple global locations across Europe and Asia (including sourcing events in Hong Kong, Taipei, and mainland China) and managing the resulting supply chains.  George has also managed export operations from the US to Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa and directed large-scale sales and demonstration operations in multiple countries in South America.

George has successfully managed the creation of multiple businesses including significant high technology start-ups.  As the executive in charge he directed multi-million dollar start-up and funding efforts including creation of corporate bylaws, private placement documentation & sourcing, venture capital and angel investor solicitation, and resulting investor relations.

Many businesses and nonprofit organizations are directly, and dramatically, affected by government policy and regulation.  George has successfully lobbied US Congressional and White House members to adopt positive policies and legislation critical to his business’ success. 

George’s education includes a BA in History from the University of Iowa, and a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Northern Illinois.  He holds 1 patent and two patents pending.

When he's not helping businesses and organizations of all sizes accomplish their potential, George enjoys fishing, the BWCAW, and a deep dive into historical research.
